Ryan Kramlich

Senior GNC Engineer, Astroscale US

Ryan Kramlich joined Astroscale US in 2022 as a Modeling & Simulation Engineer before transitioning to a much-needed role as a Guidance, Control and Navigation (GNC) Engineer. Within one year of working in this new capacity, he was promoted to Senior GNC Engineer, the position he holds today. As leader of his team, Ryan provides a vision and tracks how daily activities impact progress toward the team’s longer-term goals, ensuring that everything runs smoothly and is improved where necessary. On the engineering side, he led the GNC/M&S team in selecting a particularly valuable simulation environment for algorithm design and verification. The selected environment has saved Astroscale time and money and is now being expanded to support multiple programs. Ryan also created a long-term simulation development plan that spans algorithm design, integration with the ground support system and assembly/integration/test leading up to operations. This plan saves the time and effort normally required to prototype algorithms in a separate environment. Ryan also published a conference paper describing the environment Astroscale has created for modeling and simulation.

Since joining Astroscale, Ryan has consistently demonstrated his willingness to go above and beyond to achieve success for his team. He spearheaded a last-minute rewrite of a conference paper in a span of under 24 hours, which required a complete rewrite and edit to clarify the overall message and organizing contributions from many sources. Ryan and his team put in a late-night and early morning effort to complete the paper on time in spite of the heavy requirements. In addition to daily coordination, Ryan takes time to assist his teammates with debugging, understanding how algorithms work and setting priorities. He also served as front-line supervisor for an intern who produced extremely valuable modeling & simulation work during his short internship. Ryan recently presented the GNC solution for one of Astroscale’s programs at a major design review, prompting one of the attending outside consultants to comment that “this is one of the best teams I have ever seen.”

Outside of work hours, Ryan dedicates his time to mentoring the younger generation. He has worked with youth groups and at science summer camps for many years and also volunteers at student meet & greets during industry events. Ryan recently assisted a young friend through their calculus class by helping them understand the homework content.
